Staring Off

Caught myself in a meeting with my eyes unfocused on any events outside my thoughts
Gazing emptily at a butt-littered curb someone honked at me as traffic moved on at last
Suddenly I realized I read each word but that I was comprehending something else
I saw the manicure, fine clothes and pampered face but I did not hear her spiel

Riffing out on a tangent from one thing he had said, I never even heard the rest
Lost in contemplation, an image I would not remember was burned into my past
As I dropped into that private space their monitors showed my brain waves changing
Staring off to unseen distances, the light in my eyes shown towards the inside

I lost myself somewhere between a dream and the foolishness surrounding me
Things were making more and better sense but then, someone called my name
I heard only the birds outside the classroom thanks to her endless droning
Plotting out the might-have-beens and maybe-could-haves often led me far afield

Walking in such reveries I commonly tripped on the most obvious of obstacles
As I stared off, some perhaps thought I pondered deeply but…I was simply somewhere else
My blank fixation perhaps the visible sign of an innocuous and dreamy epilepsy
But then again my quiet abstraction might have been simply a way to get attention

Sometimes I would relive many years in the space of but several minutes
Every so often as I returned I would confusedly try to rouse myself, as if from a sleep
There was no payoff in the real world for all my semi-comatose peregrinations
I did, however, wonder if this was where I spent all that time that I was always saving

Greedily Pimping The Holidays

Every year, stoking your guilt with their latest phony hot items and newest big sellers
Another month and, What do you know? Yet another Merchant’s Holiday has arrived
They’ve got jingles and decorations, gifts and zesty-sweet, factory-produced treats
For they must perpetually increase an artificial demand simply to stay in business

They have special offers, items on sale, deep discounts and great promotions
They try to pump you full of shame and guilt should you dare not to spend
You can still buy on credit - even if there is no income behind your card
Your very humanity can be defined by simply following their purchasing cycles

$XMAS, birthdays, anniversaries, valentine’s day and others which come and go
Beautiful people in expensive advertisements meant to part you from your cash
Since you love them, For the family, Just for her, Thinking of you – And buying too much
Assuaging your guilt, buying their love & pretending to maintain Traditional Family values®

Co-opting christianity, playing on emotions and performing a greedy mass hypnosis
It’s on sale, Don’t you love them, Time’s running out. Are you some cold, cheap loser?
Halloween, thanksgiving, easter and Mother’s Day all beckon with their own tailored ads
The advertising pimps purify and hyperbolize them and parade them in front of your noses

For mother, Don’t forget Dad!, Because they love you. Buy now or forget the Happily-Ever-After
Buy this to avoid some unspoken punishment of guilt and loss of humanity
We were late again with the rent since it was little Timmy’s birthday this month
The kids are dosed with our ads and screaming for it - Won’t you make them happy?

Show her that you still love her by taking on a few more years of easy, over-budget payments
You can feel good about your debt because you didn’t buy any of this for yourself
The Chinese slave factories are being geared up for the anticipated phony holiday demand
And after every holiday the garbage truck takes away unused things that you could not afford

Perversely enough, Buyer’s Satisfaction lasts something like maybe almost 10 minutes
And then that gnawing emptiness returns and you must quickly focus on something else
You know you don’t really need it and you can’t afford it, But It’s ‘Christmas’
You struggle with your current car payments as you salivate over their latest models

Their survival and your jobs are tightly bound to leveraged over-consumption
Desperately they flog you with their absurdly creative and expensive fantasies
Their stock prices and bonuses dependent on increases in year over year sales
Locked in a deadly embrace, we dance blindly together towards an unnecessary credit abyss

They’re pumping tired Christmas carols down your throat for 2 months every year
You must buy big for birthdays and anniversaries or you are forgoing human relationships
Get with the program or face the fact that you’re an inhuman scrooge heading to hell
And don’t you dare coldly dwell on the fact it’s all invented by marketeers for salesmen & CEOs

Blood On His Hands

In Memory of George W. Bush, our 41st President
Every car bomb splatters a bit more debris upon one of his finely tailored suits
Children bombed taking candy from GIs fall as dust, coating his distinguished hair
He smothers slowly under the weight of the flags that drape each returning body
Blood drips from every word of all the speeches that he reads…but does not write

His continuing resolve only adds another to all the other long-dried layers of blood
It stains his clean white shirts and it spatters upon his conservative ties from somewhere
He hears the sucking sound it makes beneath the soles of his wing-tipped shoes
He sees it smeared on the seats of the limos in which he is whisked in security

He cannot wash off the blood of those killed by car bombs at the markets
There is no petroleum flowing to use like some fine and purifying lotion
Blood flows straight from Baghdad out his shower in a steaming dark red mist
His personal savior smiles faintly, pointing out the blood stains on his own wrists

During interviews he is peppered with a congealing spray of blood upon his makeup
His sunsets will all be blood red until the far-off day when he finally passes on
Every soldier crippled by an IED bleeds out upon his sweaty presidential bed sheets
He coughs bloody foam after nights spent in the dreams of tortured citizens

On his visits the foreigners see it gush from his mouth, nose, ears and eyes
It stains his boxers and this febrile flow cannot be quenched by any Maxi pad
It oozes squeakily out of his running shoes with every step he jogs
The kitchen floor down at the ranch is always a mess of bloody footprints

He has a pink-tinged urine and there is blood in his stool
He is splashed by each and every one of the hundreds killed every day
He signs the checks for the killing with ink made from the blood of children
The White House pool is filled with the fresh blood of virgin Muslim women

There are blood stains on the white table cloths at all of his catered meals
As he speaks he emits a fine red aerosol that air brushes his hand-picked listeners
He sponges up his bloody guilt with his now-soaked but still fatal pride
Casually wiping his neck he feels something warm and wet upon his fingertips

His small glass of wine turns into blood upon passing his smirking lips
His handlers ignore the bloody mess like they did the emperor’s new clothes
As he speaks to the children they wonder at the pool congealing at his feet
Though there is blood everywhere, he searches in vain for the source

He dreams his veins are emptying into dirt and dust under a hot desert sun
He awakens in the ongoing nightmare of the monstrosity of his actions
The blood on his hands will only disappear with the bleaching of his bones
He coughs up fat clots with phlegm-soaked nuclei of inhaled desert sands

He awakes in the night with the guilty pain of a bleeding ulcer
His sweaty clasp leaves an iron-smelling residue upon his allies hands
leaning over a GI’s bed his dripping blood spreads tiny circles on the sheets
Pink bubbles gurgle from his lips as he pursues the fleeing refugees

His anger and frustration pound in his head and brings a pressure to his eyes
As he is driven by, it appears that motorists pump blood into their SUVS
They have installed a drain in the Situation Room for him and his advisors
Even at the most joyful events he always feels it squishing inside his pants

There is no more escape in scripture and his suckups are far too transparent
He clasps his hands together in prayer and feels the dried layers of other’s blood
Lies and rationalizations no longer hold back the dike of innocent plasma
He smudges a sobbing mother’s flag saying her son’s loss must not be in vain

There is no time for other issues in the struggle against overwhelming guilt
So blood from forgotten and ignored sources comes leaking under all the doors
You would pity him except he chose to take the role, live and in full color
Every morning squishy liberal parasites have re-opened all his old wounds

His smirk has disappeared and his face grown gaunt and thin and haunted
It is a mighty effort to ignore the death and suffering that he has foolishly unleashed
We must be reminded of his humanity when all we can see is his bloody mess
His political capital long ago soaked up all the guilty blood that it could hold

Now all of our passports are printed in blood so we cannot be mistaken
Dizzy from loss of blood he orders more military monies to try and staunch the flow
His wife and children just try to act like everything is really just quite peachy
Other’s blood must flow from his veins due to the infinite quantity of his pride

Now wounded and dangerous they backbite savagely to spread around the guilt
Lighting the White House Christmas tree he notes bloody trails in the snow
The favorite passages in his old bible are smeared with a mingling of bloods
At times he prays he might just be waking up, just before he began the war

It cannot be ignored yet he cannot think about it, anymore
The festering wound to his tumorous pride hurts with every movement
Yet strangely, he only calls for fresh blood to wash away the old and dried
More killing faster must be the answer to cleaning up this mess

Long-Term Free Market Environmental Solutions

Old growth forests wont be such a divisive issue after they’re all cut down and milled
Species preservation will be a lot cheaper once all those many useless ones finally go extinct
Numbnut loud pickups and noisy Harleys will go silent when there’s no more gas to waste
Government meddling is being eliminated thanks to Washington’s political paralysis

They’ll stop this poisonous salmon farming as soon as there’s no little fish left to feed them
The American prairie will come back when it becomes too hot and too dry for our crops
Clean energy wont be an issue once it’s either burn coal again or simply freeze to death
Email spam will disappear when the bastards cant afford to run their servers

We will reduce our population to sustainable levels via global wars and epidemics
Everybody can live a developed country lifestyle when only a billion or so of us remain
We’ll curb transportation greenhouse emissions completely by wasting all of our cheap oil
Our fanatical Islamist enemies will be weakened after they finish their internecine jihads

Once we’ve stripmined the seas, there’s no worry that the fish are too full of mercury to eat
Global income disparity will disappear when everybody makes 20 cents an hour
It’ll all be organic when petroleum-based pesticides and fertilizers are unavailable
Sound bites will be simpler to create once the vast majority of adults are illiterate

OHVs and snowmobiles won’t be issues if they cost too much to pull around for wreckreation
There’ll be no housing shortage when they turn foreclosed McMansions into refugee housing
Agribusiness won’t be able to waste fossil water when there’s no power for their pumps
Lean and healthy grass-fed beef will be the norm because people will again eat all the grain

Won’t have to regulate mileage or emissions when gas always costs at least $5 a gallon
Forget greedy developers when the forests are torched and the snow doesn’t fall
Once we’ve sucked the Middle East sands dry we can just ignore them once again
Our collapsing house of credit cards will halt the Chinese environmental disaster

The Russians, or probably Asian occupiers, will prosper when Siberia thaws out for development
Fertile virgin farmlands will open up in Canada once this warming really kicks in
Australia is set to prosper from unlimited solar potential as it dries out and heats up even more
The disruption of the monsoon will relieve the filthy overcrowding of Indian cities

As South Africa becomes a desert, its problem with malaria will be greatly reduced
Millions of fire-blackened acres will curb recreational pressure on our wildlands
The collapse of commercial fish stocks may allow the battered bycatch to recover
Government bankruptcy and a lack of military fuel will curb the world’s only superpower

Alienation and anomie will evaporate in the vastly simplified struggle for everyday survival
Multinational corporate collapse will put their faceless leaders where commoners can reach them
Obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure will disappear right along with cheap factory food
Blunt reality may finally force us to once again reinvent our tired and failed religions

Terrorist Threats: The Somfukinstanis

Their ever-feuding tribal warlords fought together only against foreign threats
Their women have always been kept ignorant, barefoot, completely-covered and pregnant
Proud people with ancient traditions but without a real country of their own
Nonetheless, the scattered Somfukinstanis cling stubbornly to their dream

Their traditional homelands carved up by colonizing foreign invaders
Then left alone to constant internecine squabbles with their heretical neighbors
A dry, dusty and resource-barren high plain, long over-grazed by their goats
But the image of an independent Somfukinstan carries them ever forward

Their homeland is an ancient crossroads for marching armies coming from all directions
But a deeply-rooted religious faith sustains them even in their endless petty squabbles
Poverty and ignorance surround them just like the buzzing biting flies
Nonetheless someone endlessly provides them with cheap automatic weapons

Colorful in traditional garb, fiercely independent, but generous and open
Quick to anger and intolerant, their women must stone an unfaithful wife to death
Chosen by god to suffer - To better appreciate the paradise which ever awaits them
Persecuted and run off like stray dogs they are long-inured to all forms of hardship

They’ve found trades in hostage-bartering, drug smuggling and arms dealing
Boys perform rote memorization of the teachings of the prophet - In a foreign tongue
Sipping rancid butter tea in scant dusty shade, they rest with weapons ever close at hand
Their Somfukinstani mullah has come to bind all them in His unforgiving words

Scornful of modern ways they hope to live under a Caliphate by spreading fire
They follow their own perversely twisted version of the holy prophet’s scripture
They combine a stern and unsmiling discipline with rigid adherence to unquestionable rules
They subsist with their guns under god’s law, without electricity or running water

Somfukinstani elders have even demanded a homeland before the United Nations
Their refugees fill ghettos taking menial jobs in a dozen other countries
Yet they still speak of a great leader who conquered vast swaths of the known world
Expert marksmen, they pick apart military convoys from desolate canyon rims

They ban rock music, television, fast food and have no internet connections
They know the West is home to the devil and all manner of human sin
Terrorists are their folk heroes to whom they gladly provide safety and shelter
Medical services are non-existent and few men even know how to drive a car

The prophet bids them to revile foreign culture be it ancient statues or modern advertising
But 5 times every day they kneel in filthy clothes on tattered prayer rugs in the tired dust
Their women they keep ignorant, in order to raise yet another generation of lost men
Thus, Somfukinstani suffering must continue, fueled by ignorance, brutality and dogma

If You Haven’t, You Can’t Know

If you have not awakened to the sound of a creek burbling beside you
Where do you get the gall to vote against cleaning up our lakes and rivers

If you haven’t squeezed the throttle and heard the hoarse bellow and felt its raw power
You’ll never understand why OHVs are just the most fucking fun

If you never saw the earliest morning sun kiss a wild mountain basin
You can’t ever get a clue as to why wilderness might just be important

If you haven’t had one of your platoon buddies get his legs blown off right there beside you
You’ll not understand the great camaraderie even in a pointless and immoral modern war

If you never robbed a frightened white man at gunpoint when in need of a fix
You don’t understand what shaking with drug-enhanced psycho excitement is all about

If don’t know the rapture with which our savior fills our hearts
Your eyes are simply closed and your soul is truly dark and empty

If you have never gotten all shook up over the smell of meth abrewin’
You cant criticize the beutifool buzz that rots our teeth and makes our hair fall out

If you haven’t ever lost more than you could afford but just kept on playing anyways
You will never know how good it feels to win back even just a little bit

If you never stated proudly you were eager for the chance to clear your name
You cannot know why you then claim to have no comment regarding the allegations

If you never became quite still and simply regarded all of your wandering thoughts
You can derisively dismiss that phony bullshit about the sound of one hand clapping

If you haven’t nearly died and then realized you are looking at a peaceful sunset
It’s hard to know just how miraculous each and every second of our lives really is

If you should ever notice yourself dwelling on some phony sport or another
The door to your cure has begun to swing open in front of you at last

If you haven’t quite grasped the lure that drives men to unmuffle their vehicles
You really need to get right up here behind the wheel in this big bad baby

If you haven’t ever sweat too much and breathed too hard
You will not truly appreciate the gentle sun of a desert Winter

If you only ever eat vegetables, fruit and all that other so-called organic shit
You cannot understand the addictive joy of salt, sugar and hydrogenated oils

If you just read the bible and watch what’s new on TV
You’ll miss the wisdom of Mohammed and his buddy Isaac Newton

If you never spent too many lonely nights in the dark, all alone
You cannot fully appreciate the peace of slumbering together

If you’re always in an angry hurry because it’s still late once again
It really won’t be too easy to just sit there and listen to those stupid birds

If you’ve only weighed their arguments and critiqued other’s decisions
It’ll be hard for you to understand undertaking any real action of your own

If you never questioned the endless mowing, watering, fertilizing & pesticiding of your lawn
You probably never walked barefoot in some quiet forest meadow

If you really have thought through what you are saying right now
You won’t need to be told to just shut the fuck up, once again

If you haven’t hiked hard up to an alpine ridge on a clear september morning
You don’t deserve the gas it takes to drive your SUV over the pass, ever again

If you haven’t even saved a penny and lived large off of your maxed-out credit cards
Don’t bother to complain to me about those evil those Tax and Spenders

If you can’t even do the four operations of basic arithmetic in your head
Don’t you dare and try to question a scientist’s so-called fuzzy math

If you haven’t ever swam in a warm ocean during a real rain
You likely worry way too much about getting a little wet

If you can’t conceive of any society not based upon simple greedy profit motives
Sustainability surely sounds like another cockamemie liberal fairytale to you

If you never were in awe of the interwoven cycles of the web of this earth
You’ll find it easier to believe that we alone are possessed of a soul

If you still believe a god who awaits you created all of this and left behind his word
You need never even look into the void yet for even the briefest single moment

If you hadn’t seen those kids grow up and loved them so much through thick and thin
You cannot understand their exceptional nature or the uniqueness of their gifts

If you felt you always needed to stop in order to smell the roses
You were lucky, because you never noticed you really were not going anywhere...at all

I Left All These Tiny Ripples

Everything I do ripples outward, far beyond what I will ever see
Nowhere I have gone merely to look upon was unchanged by my coming
All the things I touch are altered in ways that I can never even notice
In turn, no one I have so much as spoken to did not change me just a bit

All the ways I tried to fix things keep changing other things as well
All the stuff you do interacts in unseen ways with all the things that I once did
Every time I replace one item I displace something else
When these two parts fit together that other one over there turns out to be a little short

Like a spaceman, stuff gets away from me and starts an existence all of its own
No one walks without their footprints changing the ocean even as it erases them
Anything I handle manipulates me with forces that I cannot see or feel
Tiny life I crushed unconsciously in my passing allowed other forms to prosper

Nothing that I toss aside has not left its ongoing trace before it more or less disappears
Every step I take turns the earth beneath my feet just the smallest fraction
A wake spreads out around me as I move through the infinite chop of others
Whenever I feel like I’m thinking for myself, it always comes from what they taught me

All their unseen co-operation make possible my rugged independence and self-reliance
Asking nothing from anyone, I still depend entirely upon others to simply live and breathe
I leave a little bit from everywhere I’ve ever been everywhere I go
Turns out my voice is but one little peep in a small frog chorus on a tiny pond

Influences my actions set in motion are continually reduced but never completely reach nothing
The sum of all my actions declines forever but only marginally reaches zero
Things others said so long ago that I never quite heard still guide me along this road
No one that has ever lived has not affected me in many ways

There is this melody in my head that is all the songs that they are ever singing
My happiness and contentment is somehow based in part upon their sadness and their suffering
Although I have no past before this life, it seems it has always lead up to this
Nothing I can imagine can ever come from outside what any of us has known

You can see me in one instant’s snapshot of the vast family tree formed by the life force
Every moment of the present I exchange a bit of my future into my disappearing past
Everything I do is very small yet so much more than what I can remember
I would be traveling in circles but time has converted them to rippling spirals

Though we make identical journeys, I cross your footprints heading the other way
I can even calculate the proportion of the sun’s energy that is falling upon my fingertip
Setting this thing in place I turn around and bump another which falls, out-of-reach, once again
